5 Things I Regret NOT Doing in College & FREE EBOOK FOR COLLEGE GIRLS
Seriously, where did the summer go? I mean, if you’re reading this because you’re about to go back to college or back to school, then you’re probably thinking exactly the same thing. It’s been 3 years since I graduated from undergrad at West Virginia University and this past May, I finished up my Master’s Degree. Ever since leaving West Virginia University, I’ve found myself reflecting each year around this time on my undergrad life. In May I took a couple old posts on lessons I learned in college (the hard way) and turned them into a video but this time I figured it would be fun to talk about the things I regret NOT doing while I was in college. But there’s a bonus surprise that comes with this post: I wrote my first eBook!
When I was looking back on all the things I learned and experienced in college, I realized that there’s a lot of issues that no one ever talks about and I wanted to do something to help. So I gathered up a few of my old college related blog posts and wrote a few more things and created The Ultimate Girl's Guide to College! Whether you’re trying to figure out what in the heck to do during Syllabus week or navigating dating, relationships, and sex, I hope The Ultimate Girl’s Guide to College will help you navigate your college years in some way (I know I wish I had something like this back then!). The best part is the the eBook is completely FREE. Yes, I went there. All you have to do is drop your email! (Bonus, you'll get access to my growing resource library, not just the eBook!).

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk more about the things I regret not doing in college.
1. Not Applying to more Schools
I went to college 20 minutes from where I went to high school and West Virginia University was the only place I applied to. While I love WVU and would not change my time there for the world, I wish I had taken the time to visit and to apply to a few more colleges and universities. I don’t know if applying to other places would have changed my decision in the end but it would have been nice to have had options to choose from and to know what college life was like at other colleges and universities.
2. Not Living in a Dorm
My freshman year I commuted from my house to college every day because, like I said, I lived about 20 minutes away. Basically the reasoning behind this was because it would save money (I’m not actually sure it did in the long run) so I never got that typical dorm experience like a lot of my friends did. While I moved into an apartment for my second year I missed out on a lot of the friendship building that goes on when you live in a dorm. Since I commuted, I also didn’t feel as connected to my university as I did once I finally moved into my apartment.
3. Not Joining a Sorority
Not joining a sorority is probably one of the biggest regrets I have from college. I always loved the idea but between my social anxiety and the fact that I was afraid people would hate me for joining one (they wouldn’t have) I ended up not even trying to Rush. This might be connected to the fact that I also wasn’t in a dorm but regardless, I wish I would have at least tried to join a sorority. Before I got diagnosed with my anxiety, there were a lot of things I just didn’t even try to do because I would get so anxious and I really wish this hadn’t been one of them.
4. Not Starting a Blog
When I was in college there weren’t really blogs like there are now. I mean, they were there but it wasn’t nearly the way it is now. I started my first blog right after college but if I could go back I would have started blogging way before that. Blogging affords you so many opportunities to meet people and to experience things that it would have been great to start back then. Also I would have found my love for marketing and content creation way sooner in life.
5. Not Having an Internship
If you didn’t already get this from the rest of the post: I pretty much didn’t do anything in college. Don’t get me wrong, I had a great college experience but I held myself back, A LOT. My undergraduate major was English so there wasn’t a lot of emphasis on having a summer internship but I wish I had sought at least one opportunity to work an internship some place like New York City or even do a study abroad. I see so many people whose lives have been changed by their summer internships or study abroad trips and it makes me want to kick myself for not looking for those same opportunities!
If you’re starting your freshman year of college take my advice: Don’t hold yourself back. College is an amazing opportunity to explore a variety of new experiences and you should be meeting each and every one of those opportunities with gusto (that’s not something that people say, Darrian…). Anyways, what I’m trying to say is that you should live your life to the fullest when you’re in college and go for those opportunities you might regret not going for later.
Don’t forget to get your copy of The Ultimate Girl’s Guide to College and if you read it, let me know what you think! Want me to elaborate on a topic? I’ve included my email in the eBook so you can reach me right away! And please, please, please share this with your friends!
