How to Have a Romantic Valentine's Day at Home
Most of us will be trying to celebrate Valentine’s Day at home this year. To be honest, my perfect Valentine’s Day for 2021 would not be spent at home (we haven’t gone on an actual date since August) but since that’s what we’re working with this year I figured I would go all-in on how to have a romantic Valentine’s Day at home. Last year my husband and I were getting ready to enter our first deployment and had no idea what the rest of 2020 was going to hold. We made the most of our time together by having Valentine’s Day at home with our family. We built a pretty awesome pillow fort, made Nutella steam buns for our easy Valentine’s Day dinner at home, and served it alongside mochi ice cream and binge-watching a few Studio Ghibli films with our son. It might not have been the most romantic Valentine’s Day ever but it was still special and definitely gave me more than a few ideas for Valentine’s Day at home. I guess we were doing Valentine’s Day at home before it was cool.
If you’re wondering what to do for Valentine’s Day at home or looking for things to do on Valentine’s Day at home, then I hope to share some inspiration with you throughout this article.
Romantic Ideas for Valentine’s Day at Home
Write letters to each other to open on Valentine’s Day
One of my favorite ideas for a romantic Valentine’s Day at home is to write love letters. The art of letter writing is one that I am personally sad has gone by the wayside and I love taking the opportunity to write one to my husband whenever I get the chance. We have an entire box filled with love letters we’ve written to each other over the years. In fact, on our first wedding anniversary, we exchanged letters as our gifts. Not only is this a cheap idea for Valentine’s Day at home but it has a huge impact on your relationship, at least in my experience. If you’re looking for ideas for Valentine's Day at home with family or your kids, this is a great activity to get them involved in and you can even go as far as having a Valentine’s Day homemade letter exchange. If you’re not sure where to start with writing love letters, I have an entire article in the archives for you!
A few other ideas to make letter writing more romantic:
Write a letter to your future selves or children, seal it in an envelope and tuck it away
Write a letter to each other at the beginning of your day and open them after the kids go to bed
Have a box of memories like us? Go through them together over a bottle of wine!
Create the perfect at-home spa night
One of my favorite things to do for myself is to take a bubble bath. If you’re planning a romantic Valentine’s Day at home, perhaps once the kids have gone to sleep, I can’t think of anything more romantic than a spa night. Truly, this was a no brainer for how to celebrate Valentine’s Day at home with my husband. You can take a bubble bath together (or chat while one of you takes a nice bubble bath), give each other massages, maybe do a little skincare, etc. This idea is also perfect for couples who are on the screens a lot. Make sure to put the phones, tablets, and televisions away for an hour or two and literally soak in each other’s company!
Make dinner together
Life with a toddler is chaotic. That means dinner time is usually one parent in the kitchen and the other one trying to keep the toddler from having a full-blown hanger induced meltdown. One Valentine’s Day at home ideas that I can definitely get behind is waiting until our son goes to sleep before we have dinner. Grab a pizza for the kids, get them to bed, and grab yourself a glass of wine or mocktail and call it a date. There are so many great ways you can turn making dinner into an amazing experience for you and your partner. One of our favorite things to do is actually have breakfast for dinner and I keep thinking of how cute and romantic it would be to have breakfast in bed… but for dinner! You could also try and make a new recipe, like creating your own sushi rolls, or create your own DIY wine tasting at home.
Take a drive together
This one might be a little harder to do if you have kids but if it’s just the two of you or you have a babysitter, taking a drive together is a great (socially distant) way to make Valentine’s Day at home romantic. My husband and I have always loved going on drives and it is still an activity we do pretty regularly even as a family. Driving together gives you time away from technology and other distractions and allows you to connect with your partner. You could make the drive more involved by flipping a coin to see which direction you go, playing games like “would you rather” while driving, or even just driving somewhere to watch the sunset together. Pack a picnic and you can enjoy it while you watch!
