Reader Recommended: Shows to Binge Watch Right Now
With Justin in the field for the foreseeable future, I knew this would be the perfect opportunity to start binge watching shows in the evenings.
I have a love hate relationship with binge watching.
Sometimes I’ll start a show, watch the first 5 seasons, and then stop cold turkey. Other times I can binge watch a show in one sitting. With so many options for streaming services and even more choices for shows to binge watch, trying to choose a show to watch can be a daunting task. Talk about overwhelming.
So I did what I know best in this situation: I reached out to all of you! I hit up Instagram stories with a question about what shows I should binge watch and boy, did you guys deliver! I’ve compiled the list of all of the Made in Mom Jeans reader recommendations submitted in case you’re like me and have absolutely no idea what to watch! I’ve also included a brief synopsis of each show and where you can watch it to make decided what show to binge watch next even easier!
Shows I’ve Watched or Started
The Office (Netflix)
What IMDB says: A mockumentary on a group of typical office workers, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behavior, and tedium.
What I Say: I actually didn’t watch The Office at all until this year. Justin and I binge watched The Office together and I had a love hate relationship with it at first. Now I rewatch it almost as much as I watch Friends.
This is Us (Hulu)
What IMDB says: A heartwarming and emotional story about a unique set of triplets, their struggles, and their wonderful parents.
What I Say: If you’re looking for a show that has it all, look no further. Unless you live under a rock then you’ve probably heard of This Is Us and believe me, it’s definitely worth a binge watch session. Just make sure to have the tissues ready.
Jane the Virgin (Netflix)
What IMDB says: A young, devout Catholic woman discovers that she was accidentally artificially inseminated.
What I Say: I’ve only watched two seasons of Jane the Virgin so far but I absolutely love it. It’s hilarious. I honestly had no idea going in if I would like it or not but the telenovela/soap opera style adds so much to the humor.
The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
What IMDB says: Set in a dystopian future, a woman is forced to live as a concubine under a fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship.
What I Say: An adaptation of classic literature is a sure fire way to get me every time. While I actually stopped watching after the first season, it’s on my list to catch up on soon. The dystopian setting can sometime seem not-so-dystopian which gives this relevant drama an eerie vibe.
Call the Midwife
What IMDB says: Chronicles the lives of a group of midwives living in East London in the late 1950s to early 1960s.
What I Say: Call the Midwife is one of the most heartwarming shows I’ve watched in a while. The characters are funny and relatable despite the 1960s setting and I already love it. If you like Downtown Abbey style historical fiction, you’ll love Call the Midwife.
Shows I haven’t Watched or Started
Dexter (Netflix)
What IMDB says: By day, mild-mannered Dexter is a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police. But at night, he is a serial killer who only targets other murderers.
Maniac (Netflix)
What IMDB says: Two strangers are drawn to a mysterious pharmaceutical trial that will, they're assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently. Things do not go as planned.
Justified (Amazon Prime)
What IMDB says: Old-school U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is reassigned from Miami to his childhood home in the poor, rural coal mining towns in eastern Kentucky.
New Girl (Netflix)
What IMDB says: After a bad break-up, Jess, an offbeat young woman, moves into an apartment loft with three single men. Although they find her behavior very unusual, the men support her - most of the time.
Anne with an E (Netflix)
What IMDB says: The adventures of a young orphan girl living in the late 19th century. Follow Anne as she learns to navigate her new life on Prince Edward Island, in this new take on L.M. Montgomery's classic novels.
Man in the High Castle (Amazon Prime)
What IMDB says: In a dystopian America dominated by Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, a young woman discovers a mysterious film that may hold the key to toppling the totalitarian regimes.
Twin Peaks (Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu)
What IMDB says: An idiosyncratic FBI agent investigates the murder of a young woman in the even more idiosyncratic town of Twin Peaks.
